The Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs is pleased to announce the recipients of the Morris and Anita Broad Research Fellowship Awards for 2018-2019.
The fellowship is a highly competitive research award available for junior, tenure-earning faculty members, as well as advanced doctoral students in one of the departments or programs of the Green School. Made possible through a generous gift from Morris and Anita Broad, the fellowship provides scholars at early stages in their careers with an opportunity to supplement other resources for advancing their research.
The award and the growing number of lives it continues to positively impact is a testament to the legacy of Morris Broad, who passed away in September of 2016.
“Morris Broad's life was defined by his generosity and unselfishness,'' said John F. Stack Jr., founding dean of the Green School. “More than just his monetary gifts, Morris gave the gift of himself to so many people, including me. He saw in our students hope for the future and the power of education to transform the world.”
Each year, selected fellows receive funding that can be used for fieldwork or archival research; the purchase of supplies such as computer hardware, software and books; and conference travel in support of their scholarship.
For Maria Sol Echarren, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Modern Languages and one of this year's fellows, the award will help cover the cost of attending the Latin American Studies Association's conference in Barcelona, Spain.
There, Echarren will present part of her dissertation about the relationship between 19th century literature and the visually vivid costumbrismo art of Argentina, Colombia and Peru.
“I think SIPA values graduate student research,” said Echarren, who also received the fellowship in 2017-2018. “To have the opportunity to go to an international conference to share our research – I am blessed to have received it.” This year, 17 students and four faculty members will receive Broad Fellowships.
